This is my favorite book! It’s the story of Sophie Hatter, the oldest of three daughters, who lives in the fairy tale world of Ingary. One day she is cursed by the Wicked Witch of the Waste, who changes her into an old woman. Sophie sets off to break the curse and encounters a fire demon, a magic castle, a mysterious scarecrow, and Wizard Howl, who is said to eat the hearts of young girls. I love this story because it takes familiar fairy tales and turns them around, and because seeing Sophie explore the magic castle is so much fun. Sophie is bossy, opinionated, and always ends up in trouble - she is my favorite character!
