Abigail's October Staff Pick

It's time to break out the scary stories and nothing is more scary than a true, horror story. The Devil in the White City is a historical book that examines the Chicago World's Fair of 1893 and the process of making the fair. The reason I call it a "scary" book is the fact that this book does not solely focus on the Fair but also on a doctor by the name of Henry H. Holmes who owned the the infamous "World's Fair Hotel." This doctor was convicted of killing nine people (though he confessed to 27) in his labyrinth of a hotel. With false partitions, peepholes and secret passageways, Holmes built the hotel with the purpose of torturing and killing his customers, usually women. The author does a fantastic job of writing a fascinating book that follows both the World's Fair and Henry H. Holmes in tandem. The book reads similarly to a novel with plenty of dialogue between characters and a constant stream of interesting events. This book is available here at the Walnut Grove Public Library.
