Abigail's August Staff Pick

I have always loved poetry and reading verse and Lois Lowry's On the Horizon quickly became one of my favorites. Her poetry is written with children in mind but this does not make each verse less meaningful or relevant to adult readers. The author's focus is on the attack on Pearl Harbor, the bombing of Hiroshima and how each event affected all the people involved. What impressed me the most about this book, was her ability to convey the hurt and loss of each event but still inspire and bring hope to her readers. Her writing is approachable and unbiased, capturing the heartbreak and pain from both the Americans and the Japanese. The illustrations by Kenard Pak further develop the historic relevancy being told in verse. This book is one for all ages and would be a wonderful addition to any reading list.
