When I read Christian fiction, I tend to feel very encouraged and uplifted afterward. During this turbulent time, I felt as though I needed a strong inspirational novel so I picked this unread novel from my shelf.
The Seat Beside Me by Nancy Moser is a modern Christian fiction novel centered around a group of passengers on a plane headed to the same destination. The story begins with each person headed to the airport and each planning to fly to Phoenix for diverse reasons. The reader quickly realizes that not all is well with the passengers and many are struggling with their own private burdens. Because of a strong blizzard, the flight is delayed and the passengers are told to wait on the plane in hopes that the weather will be clear enough for the plane to take off safely. Seated beside total strangers, the passengers begin to interact with each other and share their stories. Some passengers begin to draw closer together while others build their inner walls up higher. When the pilots declare the weather clear enough for take off, things end badly with the plane crashing and sinking in the river. Many of the passengers die and the survivors are left to deal with their turbulent emotions and the question of why this happened. The novel beautifully paints the feelings of survivors' guilt and how each person discovers how to move on and rebuild their lives after such a terrible tragedy. Some rebuild with relative ease while others are forced to make immense, life-changing decisions.
I enjoyed this novel tremendously, and found the story to have a hopeful end. The characters are well written and the plot is somewhat predictable but utterly enjoyable. It is Christian fiction and the story revolves around Christianity and God, so I would recommend it to those who do not mind spirituality and the Christian faith.
