I read this book when it first came out in January of this year. I was looking for an exciting thriller and The Perfect Mother by Caroline Mitchell was the perfect fit.
When Roz, a young Irish woman, finds out she is pregnant, her world is thrown into chaos. With little money and no husband for her little one, Roz signs up to be part of an adoption program, Miracle Moms. Roz wants her little one to have the best possible life. Roz refuses to allow her baby to grow up in a broken home like she did. According to the adoption service's website, Roz will get to choose a couple for her baby to be adopted by and they will pay for all her expenses. It sounds perfect and when a rich couple wants her child, she believes she has found the perfect family for her baby. When the family pays for her flight to New York City, Roz finds out that the couple is none other than the celebrity power couple Daniel and Sheridan. Thrilled with her match and offered a stay in their home while she is pregnant, Roz naively stays with the family in their basement apartment. Yet, Roz begins to feel uneasy about her situation and the celebrity couple. Sheridan reveals her manipulative and controlling nature, constantly showing concern for the unborn child and none for Roz's feelings or worries. Worrying she may be in danger, Roz realizes she must find a way out before the baby is born.
This thriller is a fast read and has many mysterious aspects that I enjoyed uncovering. The author does a fantastic job a setting up the story and the first half of the novel is my personal favorite. I enjoyed getting to know Roz and her lifestyle and seeing her react to Daniel and Sheridan. The second half, not counting the ending, is still great but I found the characters and their interactions with one another less enjoyable. The ending was surprising and I felt as though the author did a wonderful job of concluding the novel. I definitely see myself rereading this book again in the future.
