The Organic Artist for Kids by Nick Neddo

For many children, creating their own art is a favorite pastime. There are so many different types of art which gives children the opportunity to experiment and try new things. One of the most popular forms of art is that of pictures, paintings and prints. Many children enjoy breaking out the old paint set and plastic paint brushes to create paintings of pretty butterflies and colorful forests. Nature is a wonderful model and many topics and themes revolve around the natural world. In Nick Neddo's book, The Organic Artist for Kids, nature is celebrated by using natural, eco-friendly supplies found in nature. Instead of using store bought brushes, this book teaches youngsters how to make their own brushes with sticks and fur/hair. Berry ink and stone crayons replace the normal pen and crayons and there is even directions on how to make leaf rubbings and eco-prints.

One thing I love about this book is that it truly encourages creativity and resourcefulness. The author includes wonderful guides and instructions without making things too complicated or hard to understand. I found that that author's zeal for nature to be contagious and I couldn't help but think how amazing it would be to create my own acorn ink. With each project, the author includes information on the level of difficulty and the materials and tools needed so you can properly prepare for each activity. I would recommend this as a family activity book, especially for those with children between the ages of 8-12.
