The Moment of Tenderness by Madeleine L'Engle

When I was a child, I loved the book, A Wrinkle in Time. The plot and characters were enthralling and I absolutely loved the ideas being presented through the story. I have never read anything else by Madeleine L'Engle until I picked up The Moment of Tenderness from our library. This book is unlike A Wrinkle in Time in that it is a collection of short stories and not one continuous novel. Her granddaughter discovered these stories and pushed for their publication and wow, am I glad she did!

These short stories are beautiful and diverse in genres, ranging from entirely fictitious tales to real, personal stories from her own life. There are total of eighteen stories ranging from science-fiction, to fantasy, to realism. Her voice is uniquely her own in each story, resulting in an intriguing read sure to keep you interested from story to story. My personal favorite was "Julio at the Party." The way Madeleine L'Engle describes the party and points out each individual and their roles at said party is truly stunning. Even the twist at the end came as such a shock I had to read it twice to be sure what I read truly did indeed happen. I would recommend this book to not only short story lovers but also to those who love a variety of genres.
