The Land by Thomas Maltman

In the year 1999, Lucien's life is a wreckage of broken dreams, lost love, and an uncertain future. After a near fatal accident, he is left with horrible migraines and a slight limp, forcing him to reevaluate his life choices. His family and friends try to help him move on from the accident but no matter what Lucien does, he can't seem to find his purpose. When an older couple asks him to house-sit for them during the bitter cold months in Minnesota, Lucien accepts the offer hoping that the solitude will help him create a new video game. Another reason, which is the real reason, is that the love of his life, who is currently missing, used to live nearby with a cult-like religious group on what they simply refer to as the Land. This group is a dangerous white supremacist organization who believe the world will end with the coming of Y2K. Unsure of what could have happened to her, Lucien hopes to find out if she was killed by or if she escaped from this group. As Lucien begins to investigate the group, strange things happen to him and he finds himself being drawn deeper into their dark world.

This book is a thrilling novel that I found myself struggling to put down. The characters are interesting and have unique voices and aspirations. I found that it took a few chapters for me to truly get into the story, but once I was in, I was completely invested. Another thing I enjoyed was the reminder of Y2K and the great fear many people had with the coming of the new millennium. I had honestly forgotten about the event entirely and I enjoyed the author's well-written descriptions. This book is a great choice for anyone looking for a slow-paced thriller with a steady buildup and a satisfying ending. This book is available in the Azalea Regional Library System.
