The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd

This story takes place in early nineteenth century Charleston and follows the lives of the

wealthy Grimké household, including their slaves. Two of the main characters are Sarah Grimké,

one of the daughters, and Hetty “Handful” Grimké, one of the slaves. Hetty was presented to

Sarah in 1803 on Sarah’s 11th birthday as her personal handmaid, much to Sarah’s dismay. The

story follows Sarah and Hetty on a remarkable, 35-year journey of loss, heartache, crushed

hopes, and endurance as they strive to make lives of their own.

I found this story to be very well-written and engaging. It evoked so many emotions in me

as I followed the lives and tribulations of the characters. As I read the author’s note at the end

of the book, I was amazed and surprised to find that the characters were based on the real lives

of Sarah, Angelina, and Hetty Grimké. I wholeheartedly recommend this book and can see why

it was listed as one of Oprah Winfrey’s book club picks.
