The Great and Only Barnum: The Tremendous, Stupendous Life of Showman P.T. Barnum by Candace Fleming

P.T. Barnum has increased in popularity in recent years mostly because of the recent movie, The Greatest Showman. Rumors and stories abound about the showman but few know the real man. Candace Fleming explores the history of Barnum and his many life adventures. She begins by telling the story of his childhood and proceeds to inform her readers of his many exploits in business, including his American Museum which came much before his circus. The book includes a wonderful walkthrough of the museum and the reader feels as though they are actually exploring the museum themselves. Not only are the exhibits described, but also the people involved. Barnum employed many unique people, and the author includes their stories in her book as well. Creating savvy business plans, touring across Europe with Tom Thumb, meeting the Queen, overcoming his battle with alcohol, touring America with Jenny Lind, running for state legislature, and joining a circus, P.T. Barnum lived a life full of surprises.

I read this Juvenile Biography with some trepidation. I wasn't sure if this book would be boring or too young, but I am happy to say I was pleasantly surprised. This book was very interesting and such a pleasure to read. The author gives a lot of information but does so in such a light manner that I never felt overwhelmed or bored. This book would be great for anyone wanting to learn more about P.T. Barnum or the circus life and is available through PINES.
