As a history lover from a young age, I remember reading books about different women who throughout history, made an impact on our world. Books that are well-written and include wonderful pictures and illustrations are hard to come by. The Girl Who Rode a Shark & Other Stories of Daring Women written by Alisa Ross and Illustrated by Amy Blackwell is a rare gem of female history and empowerment.
This book includes the stories of 52 women split into six categories; Artists, Pioneers, Scientists, Activists, Athletes, and Seekers. Each woman is given a beautiful one page illustration and one page description including who they were and what they did. The language used is clear and concise, with the intended audience being that of students in upper elementary and middle school. What truly sold me on this book was the inclusion of women across the globe. The author does not focus one area but took the time to research and write about the stories of women from across time and space. Many of the women included in this book were totally new to me. Though this book is in the Juvenile section, I highly encourage both teenagers and adults to give this book a read. This book is available to be placed on hold at the Walnut Grove Library.
