Teen Titans: Raven written by Kami Garcia and illustrated by Gabriel Picolo

Updated: Mar 18, 2021

Seventeen-year-old Raven Roth is forced into a new life after she loses both her mother and memories in a deadly car accident. Thankfully, her mother's friend takes in her in and with her new foster sister, Max, Raven is given a chance at starting a new life for herself in New Orleans. Yet Raven is plagued with nightmares and can hear other's people's thoughts and feelings when she is near them. She has no idea if these powers are new or if she simply can't remember them because of the amnesia. Max and her mother are both familiar with magic and voodoo and quickly come to Raven's aid, teaching her techniques to control her powers and emotions. But even with her new families instruction, she can't help but fear the darkness hidden inside herself and the mystery surrounding her past.

This graphic novel is both beautifully written and illustrated. The plot was easy to follow and and the characters were unique and diverse. The illustrator used only shades of black, white, gray and purple to create an aesthetically pleasing read with gorgeous detail. I found this to be a great graphic novel for middle school and high school readers. This book is available through PINES.
