Once Upon a Broken Heart by Stephanie Garber

Evangeline Fox always believed in "love at first" and she knew when she first saw Luc, she had found her true love. He seemed to love her as well until one day he didn't. Now engaged to her stepsister, Marisol, Evangeline is desperate to save Luc from what she believes to be a love spell created by her stepmother. Taking dangerous action, Evangeline contacts a Fate, a dangerous and powerful being who can change a person's life forever. After working in her father's shop of curiosities for many years, she knows the magical past of all the mythic fates and believes the tragic and heartbroken Fate, The Prince of Hearts, will be able to save Luc. The Prince of Hearts, Jacks, makes a deal with Evangeline to stop the wedding only if she promises three kisses, the person, place and time of the kiss entirely up to him. Desperate to save her love, Evangeline accepts the deal with an anxious heart. Dealing with a Fate is never safe and Evangeline realizes after the first kiss how perilous her life has become. Jacks is out for much more than she bargained for and time is running out. It's up to her to discover the truth of the past so she can save her future.

Written by the same author of Caravel, this book is a whirlwind of activity, keeping its readers on the edge of their seats. Stephanie Garber does an excellent job of creating a thrilling world and an equally exciting plot. The characters are each unique and interesting, and I especially liked the main protagonist for her brilliant mind and brave heart. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a real fairytale with broken hearts, wicked beings, and a magical world. This book is available at Walnut Grove Library.
