Elizabeth Smart's kidnapping captured the world's attention in 2002, with no one knowing who or why someone would take an innocent fourteen year old girl. In her own words, Elizabeth tells her story for the world to read, explaining what happened to her while held captive, how she escaped and what was going through her mind for those eight months of captivity.
This book is written in a very gentle way, with Elizabeth leaving out some of the more graphic details. She is sensitive to her readers and is hesitant to share certain details, making it an easier read for those sensitive to abuse. Still, Elizabeth is honest about her overall experience and never justifies what her captors did to her. The writing style is quite unique in that she writes from her own point of view as a fourteen year old girl. This technique is useful in that you understand how she felt at the time of the events and why she did what she did. She was very young and innocent, having lived a very sheltered life by her loving parents, and with this writing style, the reader is able to be better understand Elizabeth Smart. Though she is tackling very heavy topics, Elizabeth's overall message is of hope and encouragement. She is religious so she talks about God and openly shares her faith and personal beliefs. I would recommend this book to anyone who is comfortable with reading about abuse, kidnapping and personal, religious beliefs.
