Lindsay Kite and Lexie Kite, twin sisters who each hold a PhD, have tackled the issue of beauty in an appearance focused society in their new book, More Than a Body. Society has long enforced a harsh, restrictive view of what is considered beautiful and many women have become experts at objectifying their own bodies to fit into that single view. Many of us today have forgotten to focus on our internal value and have become obsessed with our appearance and how others perceive us. These two authors have come together to fight back against this wrong and unfair way of viewing people. They argue that "Our bodies are instruments for our own personal use, experience, and benefit- not ornaments to be admired."
The book is only six chapters in length but it deals with a multitude of issues. From social media, to fitness and even aging, these two women expertly guide the reader through the areas of life that beauty has infiltrated and has become the highest prize. They argue that beauty in all reality is simply a sub point and not meant to be a woman's life's work. Reminding the reader of the danger of self-objectification, the authors explain that people aren't meant to look like perfect, photoshoped images on Instagram but real people living real lives. They ask the reader to “...imagine something better than beautiful for ourselves and everyone we love.” This book has dramatically changed my outlook on my own life and I personally have developed healthier and more realistic ideas related to my body and beauty. This book is one I recommend to anyone, both men and women, old and young. This book truly can inspire, educate and empower so many people by reminding them that their worth is not defined by how they appear and how well they fit into society's ever changing ideas of beauty. True worth is found in what we say and do each and every day of our lives.
