Make Me Rain: Poems & Prose by Nikki Giovanni

Nikki Giovanni has written wonderful poetry for many years and has been celebrated for her clear perception of the world around her and her astounding ability to express beautifully in the written word. Last year, she released a brand new collection of poems and prose that courageously speaks of her black heritage while exploring the realities of racism and white nationalism. Her works are unapologetic and she loudly denounces the actions of those present and past who have hurt this country and its people. Exploring her childhood, the author also tells the world of her loving relatives who rescued her from an abusive home and helped her become the woman she is today.

I picked up this book because of a recommendation and I am glad I did. I love poetry and enjoyed many of her pieces. I appreciate her honesty and her straightforward manner; she rarely minces her words in an effort to be real and honest with her readers. I recommend this book to poetry lovers and to those who want to hear from a sincere, American voice. This book is available through the Azalea Regional Library System.
