Is that the Library Speaking? by Ken Hornsby

Discovering a humorous novel that makes you laugh out loud is such an amazing find. They sometimes seem hard to find with so many amazing yet serious novels out there. Sometimes we all just need a book that makes a laugh without any solemn events or deep thoughts being included. I stumbled upon this book at a thrift store not too long ago and decided to give it try.

Is that the Library Speaking? by Ken Hornsby is hilarious story of one man's experience working in a library in England in the 1970s. Ken started working in a library believing it would be a tranquil and relaxing environment after working a stressful office job. From the very first day, Ken realizes that he may not fully understand exactly what it takes to be a librarian. From trying shelve books, to answering the switchboard, to even hunting runaway hamsters, the new librarian is in for a surprising time. The author quickly learns that maybe working in a library is not as simple as he once thought.

I laughed so many times while reading this book. Ken is a great writer and I appreciate his ability to connect to readers with simple and easy to understand descriptions and word choices. Each chapter is dedicated to its own unique story and gives the reader a new reason to smile and laugh. Since this book is from 1976, some of the topics might be considered outdated, but I see it as wonderful opportunity to learn how the library operated in the past. If you need a laugh-out-loud story with relatable characters, I recommend picking up a copy of this book today.
