Over the years I have read numerous nutrition and diet books and articles. I have tried to distill what I learned into a workable healthy way to eat. I am far from perfect and frankly enjoy sweets and soft drinks even though I know I should make better choices.
This new book from Mark Bittman and David Katz M.D. really encouraged me to think more about the food choices I am making. It made me feel good about many choices I have made over the years, but motivated me to work on areas (especially those mentioned above) that need improvement. It is written in a question and answer format that I found informative and concise. They discuss how scientific research around eating habits works, and how to think about all the articles and hype about diets the media likes to throw around. The book covers things like superfoods, fad diets, basic nutrients, dietary patterns, carbohydrates, fats, proteins, dairy, meat, gluten and alcohol. I particularly like that they tell you what we know about diet and nutrition, and what we don’t know. This new book is available at Walnut Grove Public Library.
