Lately, I have found myself drawn to thrilling adventure novels and Ted Dekker has written quite a few of them. Forbidden is the first in his trilogy of The Books of Mortals. The series takes place 500 hundred years in the future in a new and mysterious society.
After most of the planet was destroyed by human wars, a new government, the Order, has come to power and has brought peace. Scientist discovered a chemical that successfully changed the human race into a more complacent and peaceful species by erasing all emotion except fear. In this future, people do not experience sadness, anger, love, or joy. Fear is considered a pure and good emotion, one that allows the Order to keep people controlled and safe. Civilization is content and they trust that only the Order can keep their world safe from the Chaos that reigned before them. When a young man named Rom is given a vial of ancient blood, he is given the chance to experience the full spectrum of human emotion. Amazed by these new feelings, Rom believes that the world must be changed if people are to truly live. He discovers that emotion isn't bad, it's good and it's the missing piece in each person's life. He embarks on an adventure to save humanity and to bring about a new era of emotional humans.
I enjoyed this book and found myself surprised by it's many twists. Each chapter began and ended with nail biting sentences that immediately captured my interest. The plot is well planned and executed, though some of the character are bit cliche and the dialogue a tad predictable. Still, I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a science fiction and futuristic novel.
