Young adult fantasy is not my go-to-genre, but sometimes I want something with a little more action. In many cases, YA fantasy authors create a fast paced, thrilling world that keeps me guessing of what will happen next. I love a good book filled with exciting characters, a stunning plot, and gripping intrigue on every page. Some YA novels do this effortlessly while others struggle to keep me interested after five chapters. Dreamtreaders by Wayne Thomas Batson is most definitely the former.
Archer, a fourteen-year-old boy, is one of three of humanity's great protectors who fight to keep reality and dreams in balance. Archer is a Dreamtreader who is given the gift of lucid dreaming; the ability to control and explore one's dreams. He is charged with using his gift to defend the waking world against the Nightmare Lord, a terrifying villain bent on reeking havoc in people's dreams. As the Nightmare Lord grows stronger, trouble begins to brew in the waking world for Archer. Unfortunately for the teenager, strange things begin to happen with the arrival of new student, Rigby Thames, a brilliant boy with a strange heritage and an even stranger connection to Archer's childhood friend, Kara Windchil. With these new developments, Archer begins to realize that he must use his time in reality and dreams to uncover the truth of both worlds.
After reading this book, I can definitely say that this book is one of my new favorites. I fell in love with the characters and the story had me hooked from the first chapter. If you're looking for a new read, I highly recommend picking up Dreamtreaders and discovering the secret and dangerous world of dreams.
