Like many people, the beginning of a new year finds me itching to make a fresh start by cleaning and organizing my home. Even though I am a neat and organized person by nature, I enjoy reading books about this subject for new knowledge and suggestions. This book, Decluttering at the Speed of Life by Dana K. White, does not disappoint. In the book Dana White shares realistic home management strategies and a message of hope for the hopelessly messy. She does this with her room-by-room decluttering strategies. She also uses humor and empathy in her writing. The suggestions in the book help you to tackle clutter at a pace that works for you and your schedule. She uses five easy to apply steps to help you work through your spaces. The best thing that I took away from this book is the suggestion to view each area as a container, whether it be a shelf, cupboard, closet, etc. Whatever the “container,” use that as your guide as to how much to keep. If your items go beyond the confines of your container, then continue to throw away or donate things until what you have fits. After you have cleaned out and organized your “containers”, then it is easy to keep it up by using the “one in, one out” rule. I recommend this book to anyone just beginning to take control of their clutter as well as to seasoned organizers like me.
