What if Elsa and Anna never knew each other? What if the two princess grew up far from each other, each being raised by a different family? Conceal, Don't Feel by Jen Calonita explores another version of the well-known Frozen story where the two sisters are forced to be live apart, unaware of the other's existence.
Elsa is raised in Arendelle by her two loving parents. She has no knowledge of her powers or her sister, believing she is an ordinary princess. Strangely, Elsa always feels as though something, or someone, is missing from her life. Lonely, she desperately wishes for a friend her own age. Anna is raised in Harmon, a small village further up the mountain. Her adoptive parents are gifted bakers, training Anna to one day take over the family business. The little village is a quiet and kind place but Anna feels drawn to Arendelle. She wants to see the world and believes her destiny lies in the city. Living what feels worlds away, the sisters' lives take a drastic turn when Elsa uncovers Anna's existence and loses control of her powers at the same time. The kingdom is in eternal winter and both sisters feel drawn to one another yet are unable to connect. How can these two sisters find each other and end the winter when both are still struggling to remember their past?
This juvenile novel was a delightful read and I enjoyed the author's take on the characters in the film. The novel does a fantastic job of creating a new mystery from the original story and I found myself trying to figure out why the two sisters were forced apart. This book is a great read for not just children but any Disney fan young or old.
