Science has long been a field dominated by men, but we are seeing more diversity in the STEM world today than ever before. More and more young girls are showing an interest in science and are making career choices that differ greatly from what we have seen in the past. For both parents and teachers, it is immensely important we encourage these future scientists and be a help and not a hindrance. One way we can do this is by bringing to light the women of the past who pushed boundaries, made huge discoveries and had positive impacts in the STEM world.
Born Curious by Martha Freeman is a wonderful resource of inspiring female scientists. Each woman's story is told in a short chapter, reviewing their personal life, goals and accomplishments. The chapter ends with a summery of their greatest achievements, a famous quote and a fascinating fact. The language used holds the reader's attention and the story is told in a fun, intriguing manner. There is some rather tough science lingo that might be a challenge for some readers, but thankfully the author includes an extensive glossary at the end of the book. The wonderful illustrations by Katy Wu are the perfect addition to this fantastic book. I would highly recommend this book for children ages 7-12.
