I know during this time in our lives, post-apocalyptic books have risen in popularity, but I actually read this book last year. I was looking for another book written by the same author and stumbled upon this one instead. With its two-color cover and interesting description, I just had to give it a read.
Black: The Birth of Evil by Ted Dekker is the first book in a series of four novels. Thomas Hunter, a man on the run from his past mistakes, gets injured from a bullet and topples off a building. When he wakes up, he is in an entirely different world. The world he knows has been destroyed by a terrorist-created virus that will happen in only a few weeks from the time he fell off the building. In this new reality set years ahead of his time, a new civilization has formed where evil is contained away from humans. Thomas struggles to understand what has happened to him when he suddenly awakes in the current day once more. He is forced to travel back and forth between these two realities every time he falls asleep and dreams. Unsure of what is real and what is a dream, Thomas begins to learn new things about each world. If this new world is truly the future after the apocalypse, then he alone may be able to find the answer to stopping the world-destroying virus. Yet with every choice Thomas makes, he begins to question if he is truly stopping the threat or if he is the one pushing it forward.
This book is an exciting thriller and constantly kept my attention. I devoured this book in a matter of days and it did not disappoint. Of course, it is part of a series so I decided to get the next few books to find out how the story would end. Do not let the fact that it's part of a series stop you from picking up Black. Even if you read just the first book in this series, you will still enjoy it greatly. If you are interested in a nail-biting adventure with well developed characters and a captivating plot, I recommend reading this book today.
