Anne Frank was a young girl living in the Netherlands during Nazi occupation in the 1940s. While hiding in a warehouse with other Jews, Anne wrote about her life, struggles and dreams in her diary which she named Kitty. Her story became well known after her father published her diary a few years after her death in 1947. Both beautiful and tragic, her story can be challenging to explain to younger readers. Linda Marshall and Aura Lewis did a wonderful job of exploring her life and her reasons for writing in her diary in their short book. With such a heavy topic and a tragic outcome, the two women beautifully balanced a hopeful but realistic point of view for Anne's story. The illustrations are gorgeous and help create a narrative that can be effortlessly grasped by elementary aged children. This book is available at the Walnut Grove Library and through the Azalea Regional Library System.
