I was browsing through the stacks at the library one day when I noticed this little novella squished between two large books. I'm not sure what drew me to it; maybe it was the beautiful colors or the thought-provoking title. Whatever the reason, this book came home with me and when I started reading it, I was shocked to find that such a small book could contain so much emotion and wisdom. I was moved by not only the actions of the characters but also by how the author made me feel hope for the future, for both the characters' futures as well as my own.
And Every Morning the Way Home Gets Longer and Longer by Fredrik Backman tackles the daunting topic of Alzheimer's and memory loss among seniors. The story centers around an older man who knows he is beginning to forget some of his most cherished memories. He is afraid of losing what's important to him, but thankfully, his grandson is there to remind him of the family who will never leave him. The two love mathematics and form a close bond over this shared passion, a relationship that gives them the opportunity to help one another learn valuable wisdom for the road ahead.
This short work of fiction story truly showcases compassion and regret, family and belonging. Only 97 pages in length, Backman has successfully spread an entire lifetime across every page. Prepare yourself for shedding a few tears and keep a box of tissues nearby. If you have a loved one who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's or maybe you just want to understand what it is like for those struggling with memory loss, I highly recommend reading this short novella. It is a beautiful reminder of humanity at its kindest.

I also loved And Every Morning The way Home Gets Longer and Longer! It drew me in because it was a very quick read, and I enjoyed his other books- A Man Called Ove and My Grandmother Asked Me To Tell You She's Sorry. I really enjoy his writing style and the beautiful messages and content of his books. I also highly recommend!
