A Single Thread by Tracy Chevalier

Set in 1932 England, this is an interesting snapshot of the time between the wars. Violet Speedwell is a spinster working as a typist at an insurance company in Winchester, England. She is trying to build a life for herself after the loss of a brother and her fiance’ in World War I.

I especially enjoyed the information concerning the Winchester Broderers. This was a group of volunteers at Winchester Cathedral that embroidered kneeling cushions and chair or pew cushions for the Cathedral. This portion of the story is based on actual events. There is also fascinating information concerning bell ringing, something I knew very little about. The social conventions and mores of the early 1930s are well depicted in this novel.

If you enjoy novels that include the fiber arts in their story, I would also recommend The Lady and the Unicorn: A Novel also by Tracy Chevalier. NF
